Jessy Cardenas Ms. Lehmann English 1-3 19 September 2018 Summary of “Rituals Of Memory” Kimberly Blaeser's essay, ”Ritual Of Memory” argues that we always come back to our roots. Bleaser begins her essay with a metaphor that shows readers her opinion about how relationship to family and community work. She uses her memories of the legionaries as evidence for her claim. She had Native American and Catholic schooling that at times agreed and at times were the exact opposite. Bleaser sums up by saying that all of our stories and memories define who we are.
Jessy Cardenas Ms. Lehmann English 1-3 19 September 2018 Summary of “Night Calls” The short story “Night Calls” by Lisa Fugard, starts off with visual discomfort between the narrator and her father. The father is distant, depressed, and emotionally detached. The reason for this is the death of his wife. The mom dies, the narrator is sent to boarding school and her father almost moves out of their home. Later in the story, a red heron is captured and is put under the control of the father, which gives him purpose, eventually leading to the improvement of the narrator and father’s relationship. Eventually, the bird gets out and dies. The daughter, in order to make her dad happy, makes bird call at night in order to give her dad hope and purpose.
Jessy Cardenas Ms. Lehmann English 1-3 19 September 2018 Summary of “Once Upon A Time” “Once Upon A Time” is a short story by Nadine Gordimer that warns readers that what they try to protect could be what they hurt. The story opens with the author of the story fearing she is being robbed. She begins to tell herself a bedtime story to calm herself down. The fairy tale begins with an upper class family who lived in the suburbs, with segregation from those all around them. As the story continues, crime begins to become more common in the suburbs and the family feels the need to upgrade security, building a wall and adding a razor wire for protection. After hearing a story about a brave knight who makes his way through a thicket of thorns to save a princess. He crawls into the razor wire pretending to be the night. He gets caught in the razor wire, being mutilated by the very thing meant to protect him.
Summary Reflection 1. List one thing you've learned from writing this paper that you can apply to other writing assignments. What will that look like?
I learned how to properly italicize and thats going to present its self by getting me a better grade in the future messages.
2. Identify a specific revision you were asked to make and explain why (this can be at any stage of the writing process). How did you revise? What did you learn?
One revision I had to make is by spelling names and important words properly. I changed the names I messed up and I learned the importance of paying attention to small details in the paper.
3. What are the conventions of a summary and how did you meet those in this assignments?
In a summary there are no opinions in it and you can just state the most important parts of the story.
4. Given more time to work on this assignment, how would you improve it?
I feel like I would have improved it by thinking out how to construct a sentence and making the summary have a better flow.
5. What is one thing you're proud of in the paper?
I am proud of the whole essay in general. I am proud in the fact that these paper came out so good.
