Jessy Cardenas Ms. Lehmann English 2-2A 4 December 2019 Is It Worth Your Time?
Elizabeth Berg once said, “We are readers probably more than anything else.” Since time is a limited recourse, we should carefully choose the articles we give that time to. Dorothy Rowe’s article about friendship, titled “With Friends Like Theses...” is certainly worth your time if you are looking for basic knowledge. The authors background contributes to the quality of this article. Dorothy Rowe is qualified to write this article because she has a degree in psychology, and she has experience as a psychologist. Rowe writes to entertain and inform. She talks about how friendships can affect aperson’s outlook on life and their emotions. Her writing style makes it clear that she isn’t writing to be a source for a research paper, but to give basic knowledge to an everyday reader. Another reason readers can tell this is what she is doing is because throughout her article, she does not state any of the resources from which she got her information.Therefor readers just havetotrust her. If it was more of a serious article, she would have state her evidence and she wouldn’t worry about trying to connect with the reader by trying to find common ground. The format was very straight forward with not a lot to keep the reader entertained. The one thing that Rowe does do to keep the reader entertained is give her personal stories that provide insight to her experiences and help further her main claim. Rowe inserted section titles to clearly state what the author was trying to say. In the introduction of the article, the main claim is clearly stated. She did a good job with the organization, using the section titles to inform the readers about what they are about to read. Rowe hooks the readers by finding common ground. Rowe’s article has a clear beginning and end; it also does a good job of stating her main claim early and going back to it at the end of the article.Rowe tries to persuade the reader that friends are necessary in the development of emotions and our outlook on life. In order to do this, she states her own personal experiences and real life stories to support her main idea. The one downfall of her article is that there is no outside research that supports her main claim. This makes this article not suitable for in depth research. It should only be used to establish basic knowledge. In conclusion,Rowe is qualified to write this paper because of her degree in psychology and her experience working as a psychologist. The format of her paper is very straight forward and organized; the readers know what they are getting into early on. The content in the article is believable, but Rowe does not give and evidence for her claims except for her own personal experiences and life stories, which are not reliable sources when writing a research paper. It all it finds a way to intrigue and keep the reader entertained. Dorothy Rowe’s article is worth your time if you are looking for basic knowledge, but if you areis looking for sources to start a research paper, this would be a waste of time because of the lack of outside research and sources.
Article Review Reflection
Please answer all questions in complete, grammatically correct sentences.
Explain the process you went through to write this paper. Please be specific.
So first Ms. Lehmann walked us through the out line for both of the papers, then she gave us our introduction and after that she gave us time to work and finish the review.
2. What qualifies this paper as an informative essay? What are the requirements for a review and how did you meet them? It qualifies as an informative essay because it lets the reader know about the specific article that I was reviewing. The requirements of a review paper is to read the article, take notes while reading the article and state factual evidence about the article. I meet these qualification because I read and took notes about this article, I also only stated factual evidence about the article, everything I was stating was true.
3. What one piece of advice would you give someone writing a review for the first time? Why? I would tell them to pay attention to the article and to understand the true meaning of the article before you review it. I would give them this advice because I feel like if I didn't have Ms. Lehmann there helping me find the true meaning of the story it would have taken me a lot more time to complete my review because you can't review something if you don't know the true meaning of what you are reviewing.
